INFORMATION ABOUT CONFIDENTIALITY

All interactions with me, including the scheduling of your appointments, your attendance at appointments, the content of your sessions, your progress in counselling, and your records, are confidential, in accordance with privacy legislation. I am following practices and regulations of the “Privacy of Personal Information Act” and the “Freedom of Information and Protection Act” for British Columbia.

EXCEPTIONS TO CONFIDENTIALITY

No information about you and your family members will be released to any other person without your written consent, with the following exceptions:

  • In cases of suspected or disclosed child abuse or neglect (children witnessing physical abuse is considered child abuse or neglect), counsellors are obliged to inform appropriate authorities in the Ministry of Children and Family Development.
  • In cases of current or past sexual abuse in which the offender has present access to minor-aged children, counsellors are obliged to inform appropriate authorities in the Ministry of Children and Family Development.
  • When a client states that they intend to inflict bodily harm to another person, counsellors will have to notify the intended victim(s) and/or appropriate authorities.
  • When a client states that they intend to commit suicide, counsellors will have to notify emergency services deemed necessary to save the life of that individual.
  • There are times when records can be subpoenaed to court.
  • There is also the possibility that service providers will be called to testify in court at the direction of the judge or other court order.

COUNSELLING RECORDS

Counselling records are managed and stored in a secure manner, according to required regulations. Client files are kept a minimum of seven (7) years before they are securely destroyed.

 Counselling records remain the property of Sunon Counselling. You have the right to access your personal information by submitting a written request. You may also request or agree with a written consent for Sunon Counselling / Bettina Egert to release specific information regarding your counselling to specific individuals/organizations as required.
